Dear all,
Another year, a new almanac! In 2021 State of the Arts will organize monthly meetings again. Every last Saturday of the month we will gather in another city or online, around another hot topic in arts and society. Change starts by exchanging again…
Welcome for the first event in January on Rest.
State of the Arts
MAKE (Y)OUR ALMANAC
Over the course of four seasons, State of the Arts will prepare a second edition of the Fair Arts Almanac: a publication that gathers ideas and perspectives on change in today’s arts and society. In 2019 – together with many collaborators – we made a first Fair Art Almanac.
This time, we want to have even more people participate. Would you like to get involved? Take your agenda!
Every last Saturday of the month, we invite you to another city, reflecting about another topic.
- 30th of JANUARY: taking & giving rest, at your place or elsewhere (Waerebeke)
- 27th of FEBRUARY: social security and the reform of the “artists’ statute” (Bxl)
- 27th of MARCH: imagining and practicing a class for an activist art education (Ghent)
- 24th of APRIL: ecology and other-than-humans in the arts in viral times (Leuven)
- 29th of MAY: new space(s) for artistic practices, living and working (Antwerp)

TIME TO REST
“Everything in nature needs to rest. The Earth can not exist without deep pauses. Farmers allow the soil to rest before planting seeds. Our bodies deserve nothing less”
The Nap Ministry
Though we all know the importance of rest and being aimless and directionless, it’s often easier said than done. Rest, as an active engagement, asks for more than passively doing nothing, or simply not working. How do we allow ourselves and each other to take and cherish rest? Can we structure the arts, and society at large, in a way that includes periods of rest?
State of the Arts will transform our January Almanac session into a day of experimentation on and with Rest.
Our proposal is simple: we invite you on Saturday 30th of January 2021 to either
take a rest
or
give a rest.
In short, we set up a mutual support system that allows for rest. We see this in a very practical way – as a real life experiment.
Why? More explanation here.
How? Fill in the subscription form until Tuesday evening, the 19th of January, then we’ll get back to you with more information.
