SOTA SYMPOSIUM 2
De Munt / La Monnaie, Feb. 22nd 2015 – report per rounds and tables
The symposium was structured in 4 rounds, 5 points of debate and a decreasing number of round table discussions. With each round the number of participants per table grew and the number of tables decreased. In round 1 there were 25 tables on 5 points. Round 2 were 10 tables on the same points. Round 3 consisted of 5 tables - each focused on one point. The last round was a final 'plenum'. Each round aimed for a different outcome - cases, questions and proposals. The 5 points of debate relate to the State of the Arts' vision, aims and action text.
First of all the key notes:
Diversity point 1 : The arts as equal valued in a network of other practices structuring/deconstructing society
We consider the arts to be an equal player in the broad range of practices that constitute society, like sience, education, healthcare, trade, politics… We believe the position of the arts needs to be reinforced, starting with that of the artist as a central player. We strive for (re)integration of the arts in various social and political fields to enrich those and as such enrich the arts.

Diversity point 2 : Diversity of players within the arts field
A rich and healthy art field equals an eco system, composed of many different players that reinforce each other inter- dependently. The aim is to preserve and encourage this plurality and multiplicity, safeguarding dif- ferent scales of art institutions and organi- sations in ever changing and unpredictable connectivity.

Diversity point 3 : Diversity of art forms
The intrinsic value of artistic research and experimental, trans-disciplinary and social -artistic practices is plural, contradictive and cannot be standardized. We applaud the bridging of the gap between different disciplines in the Kunstendecreet, but we ask for awareness towards the singularity and specificity of different art practices and the essential value of this diversity for the cultural sector.

Diversity point 4 : The specificity of finance models for the arts within the diversity of economies
Public subventions are inherent to the spe- cific and complex economical organization of the arts. Transition towards other models of financing must be treated with caution and critical reflection on the obvious con- sequences of the Anglo-Saxon model and unacceptible forms of precarity. It is essential not to confuse the organi- zation and economy of a free and autono- mous public arts sector, with a so called ‘cultural industry’ run by the logic of the market.[ADD SHORT TABLE PRESENTATION]

Diversity point 5 : Diversity of organizational models for various art practices
Artist know the specificity of their practice better then better than anyone else. The need for self-organization and the possibility to follow the particular logic of the individual practices demands to be recognized. Self-organization in the arts should not be confused with the promise of self-suffician- cy. We want to look into the different models of self-organisation, their resiliance and how they can be enhanced by policies.
